Jean Stern is the Director Emeritus of The Irvine Museum which he led for 26 years since its inception. He is the leading authority on the subject of California Impressionism, a name he coined in the 1980's. He is the author of many books and articles on the subject of California Impressionism and contemporary Plein Air painting. He is an art consultant to individual private collectors and several museums. He has presented more than 250 lectures about these subjects all over the United States and in Europe. He has judged more than 100 art shows. He is an advisor to the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA) and serves on the board of the California Art Club (CAC). He is the recipient of Lifetime Achievement Awards from LPAPA, the Plein Air Painters of America and Plein Air Magazine, as well as the William and Julia Wendt Award from the CAC. In 2018, Jean Stern was presented with the prestigious Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture.
